DEC 7th

Call to Order: 7:48 p.m. President Richard Gauthier conducted the meeting

Welcome New Guests:

Tom Beckett - 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.  Father was a Trailblazer

Gina

Trip Reports:

Mike C. went to Carrizo Plains.  Traveled through the coastal mountains and found old camps and such.  He also went to Surprise Canyon and Panamint.  Trona was dead and dying, no fuel to be found.  Wend through Randsburg and then to Ridgecrest for fuel.  Did some hiking and saw some burros.

Matt W. went to Panamint Valley Days.  Rough.  Scout guys ran V.  Managed to get a tent up with a little wind and the weather was kind of chilly late in the day.  It appeared that attendance was down about 20%

Mike K. went to the Desert Bar in Parker - took the back way in with Razr and Quads.  He also hit the big waterfall, stock up to waterfall and then rough.  Waterfall is N of the Desert Bar.  Desert Bar runs noon to dar Saturdays and Sundays Memorial Day through Labor Day.  Outdoor bar that is solar powered and off the grid.  All the trails in Parker end @ the Desert Bar.  Troopers parol the main roads out of the bar.  Very diverse crowd and live music.

Justin B/Richard G - Goatfest - Justin broke an axel on Claw Hammer.  Richard had a miss thought it was a fouled plug but turned out to be a bent pushrod, so his buggy did not run but he did a lot of co-piloting.  Ran a new trail called Dirty Luv.   Huge dinner Saturday night.   All in all lots of rigs in and out over the weekend but a great time had by all.

Sherman pass run had three people show.  2/3 of the way to the top there was a down tree and at the time they only had axes.  A group behind them helped and even with the dull axe they were able to get most of the tree out of the way.  Very slippery and some snow up top.  Sherman is closed now.

Approval of Meeting Minutes.  - Motioned and approved by John and Joe.

Treasurers Report: Previous balance $2802.89.  Current balance $1778.94

Old Business:

Ken reviewed the Veterans Day Parade.  Trailblazers received a 1st place.  Gene wired a CB in PA mode and spoke about what the club does and saving trails.  There were 8 or 9 rigs so there were not enough there with ability to stack.  Kids marched out in front with the banner.  Overall good time and nice community spirit.

Jeri has business cards.

Show of hands asked for those attending the Christmas Party at Randy and Sandy’s.

New Business:

Calico - Discussion on where we stand.  Reservations need to be done if you are going.  New rules regarding cancellations.  If you cancel 30 days or more in advance you get to keep part of your fee.  If you cancel 11 days or less you forfeit your entire fees.  Looking at another avenue to use as the clubs main fundraiser.  Proposing doing a Bakersfield Land Use Run and local BBQ so we can get more people and local involvement.  BBQ could involve many people as there would not be a run requirement along with it.  More likely to receive support from our local businesses if we are to keep the fundraiser in town.  Dinner and the raffle would be the money earners.Wednesday January 3, 2012 meet at Coco’s at 7pm to discuss the details.  Venues, volunteers needed, activities, Steward of the Sequoias involvement etc. Leave the Calico March dates open and use as a “fun run”, not as our fundraising event.Discussed using a late April early May date for the proposed fundraiser.

Up Coming Runs

Matt W. does a Tour De Sober on New Years Day.  Meet at the Flying J at 9am and then run the wash.

Trip Reports:

Rubicon - Only three other people on the trail sluice was very beat up.  New bathroom by Ellis Lake.  Rocking dirt road locations.

Mike went to Jawbone, then Nightmare and then took his wife to Rubicon.  They watched several try the waterfall.  There was a Samurai and a Toyota there and they did not make it up.  Jeremy went as well.  Sammy put on a good show but made it out safe.  Some of the group went out Last Chance.  Mike got lost.  Nightmare ope till the end of January.  There were two stock YJs on the trail as well, they were taken care of.  Jack, Joe and Gene were also there on the run.  Joe was there in his “new pimped out rig”, he had a problem with some loose lugs but all in all safe.

Several went to the meet and greet for Infectious Off-road at G&G.  There were about 38 rigs and members from 4x4Him Bakersfield and Trailblazers.

Upcoming

Christmas Party still on for December 9th at Randy and Sandy’s home.  Potluck and same gift exchange as last year.  Show of hands regarding who has Yahoo account.  White elephant gift, guys bring a guy gift and gals bring a girl gift.

Presentation

Stewards of the Sequoia put on a presentation regarding BLM plans on which trails will stay open and which will be closed.  Of the seventeen million acres that are being looked at the area we focused on was in or around Lake Isabella.  There were several plans that were possibilities for action.  The plan that the Stewards choose to back was ALT B which was a proposal of closing approximately 165 miles of trails.  The area near Keysville was the biggest hit and it closed nearly all routes that lead to the river.  Handwritten letters regarding what we as off-roaders want hold more weight and we were asked to write letters then and there at the meeting.  We were asked to submit comments requesting to keep specific areas open.  We were told that the more specific the requests are along with the reasoning to back it up would hold the attention of the BLM the most.  There is a proposal to create Keysville Special Recreation Management Area which would be fee based access.  The fees that come from this area would also assist in signing trails as well as keeping more trails open.  For more information regarding the presentation or BLMs plan please go to

Sept 7th, 2011

Call to Order: 7:47 p.m. President Richard Gauthier conducted the meeting

Announcement:  Richard Gauthier announced that Sandy Worley had a stroke.  He passed a card around to the members present who wished to send her well wishes.

Run Reports:  Coyote Lake, Richards Gauthier and Jeremy Rowell.  Friday morning start, lunch at Red Lake and by 2p.m. they were at Coyote.  All in all the mosquitos were tolerable with the right spray (deet).  Gorgeous lake, lots of rock crawling.  They tent camped.  Swamp Lake was the next camping area.   It was busy due to this years late open, but still found good spots.  There was an interesting incident from another group in which someone had broke and left their rig, someone else decided to “help them out” by taking some of their gear.  The gear and rig were recovered.  Chris R broke a control arm, he had left hours before them and they caught him 50 yards before the trailhead and got him welded up.  All in all Swamp Lake and Coyote Lake offer some great trails.

Calico trip reviewed by Andy.   He said it was really hot.   The night runs and early morning runs were the way to go.  Buggy had issues with a hose/fuel filter which caused them to stop every few miles and blow it out.  Johnny Bair was there too but with no rig.

Doug Hawley went to Freeway Ridge, tore up some fenders but all in all a good run.

New Members:  Motion to reinstate Doug Hawley as a member.   Club all in favor.  Doug was a past president of the club.

Scott McMillen - “97 TJ 6 cylinder 37” tires.  Richard stated that Scott is about the only person he know that has wheeled more places than himself.

First Aid Kit: Richard Gauthier

Porta Potty:  Richard Gauthier

Approval of Meeting Minutes.  - Motioned by Eileen and seconded by Mike.  Approved.

Treasurers Report:  Eileen provided report, beginning balance $4871.14, ending balance $4217.14.  Donation made to Stewards of the Sequoias, paid for PO Box and make deposits that had recently been collected.  The Stewards of the Sequoias sent a thank you note regarding the donation.

Old Business:

1.  Veteran’s Day Parade - Entry request has been sent.  Entry fee was free.  Jeri has purchased bunting and flags for decorations.  There was a raise of hands taken for those interested in participating.

Banner has come in and the club was able to view.

2.   Large blue banner with the Bakersfield Trailblazers written across received and viewed by club.

3.   Calico annual trip.  Great trails, great times.  Looking to move event to a better time of the year due to the weather.  Checking to see if Wayne will run the raffle again (if he gets some help).   We also need volunteers for trail leaders.   Calico earns the money that we use to be able to fund non-profits and keep our trails open.  The tentative date is March 23 - March 25.

4.  Meeting Place - It has been determined that a move is needed.  The goal is to have a new meeting spot by the first of December.  Some of the suggestions were Tony’s Pizza, The Hacienda.  We will look into options and supply updated information at the next meeting.

5.  Yahoo Group & Facebook.  General consensus is that these two forums are an effective way for the group    to group to communicate.

New Business:  Show and Shine idea brought to table.  The idea would be to have a more informal meet and greet type atmosphere.  It was brought up that Infectious Off-road uses this type of meeting regularly on the second Thursday of each month at Chuy’s on Rosedale Hwy.  Possibility of joining up with IOR for a show and shine meet and greet combined as there is already a good meld between the groups.

Upcoming Runs:

*  IOR Night Run on 09/10/2011 for 9/11 commemorative run.

*  Fright Night 10/22/2011.  Point Mugu Club sponsored event.  Jeremy will be going and heading up a skit, hanging out and camping.  There are usually 75-100 rigs at this event.

June 1, 2011

Call to Order: 7:40 p.m. President Richard Gauthier conducted the meeting

Two New Guests Present

Trip Reports:

Randy - Ran Calico and Hight Desert.  Gene C High Desert ran Bullfrog a mild to moderate run.  They had some technical issues but a fun mile and a half run.

Gene, Mike, Wayne and Crazy Joe went to Crowbar and did some rock climbing.  There was a broken shovel and a top that almost got taken off.   They went in the escape between Section 1 & 2, Gene broke between two boulders.

Cougar Buttes was a good play area and all in all they like the new area.  Crowbar is about six miles away but there are three trails there and lots of waterfalls.

Gene C. went on a cruise ship to Ensenada and took rented jeeps on a wine tasting tour.  The jeeps were stock but Gene was able to play in some mud puddles and entertain his passengers.

Jeremy ran Miller Lockwood.   Hatchets and Chainsaws were on hand to deal with the downed tress.  There were about 20-30 down in the area just outside the burn area with Miller just in sight.  Then there was the rollover,  Joe claimed it was his own stupidity as the linkage from the brakes hit the floor board and rather than hit the jeep in front of him he turned to what he thought was an uphill area and proceeded through several manzanita bushes.  He tried throwing it in reverse and Jack was yelling hit something, he found another manzanita bush which did not slow him down.  The last thing he remembers is a hard right and going over to the side.  Point Mugu came together and between the two clubs Jack and Joe were triaged (although Jeremy was saddened that he did not get to use the de-fib).  Point Mugu took Jack and Joe back to the trailhead and the trailblazers did the recovery of Joe’s jeep with Jason having an interesting adventure as wheel man.

Joe says thank you to all and it is very gratifying to be a part of the group.  The rollover garnered us 25 new Facebook friends.

Eric ran Miller again which was unexpectedly cold.  There were about six Scouts, five Jeeps and an FJ - Jeremy took the trail lead.  Run incidents; an issue with the brake line that some vice grips were able to take care of, a blue Wagoneer (Jeremy) broke a tire and was able to turn around on their own by the time the group was able to turn around they were all fixed.  They snapped a tie rod  - vice grips, filing and finally got enough thread to get hooked up and go.  It snowed off and on all day and for those who were not prepared it was a cold run.

Wayne, Richard, Clifford and some Infectious members went to Calico and ran Scrambler Canyon.  There were several JKs, a Suburban and some trucks.  It was the most body damage they had seen on a run in many years.  The Suburban went in with four working doors and half way through the run only one of the rear doors were working.  There was a Chevy truck that lost their rock sliders and most of the skin.   Gatekeeper was last and they went through with a come-along holding the rig together.   Yellow jeep rolled while the trucks were being winched.  Richard and Clifford blazed a new trail for about five hours while the traffic was taking care of itself.  These guys tore stuff up but still said it was the best run ever.

Approval of Meeting Minutes.  - Motioned and approved.

Treasurers Report: Clifford supplied the report.  Reminder that dues are to be paid today.  $65 and mail to Eileen if they were not paid tonight.

New Business:

Discussion on the possibility of making cards and flags.  Possible re-design of the logo to modernize.  Thinking of making it more circular, newer jeep and keeping the guy but taking a way the flag.  Jeremy will work on some ideas.

No flags have been ordered yet.

Event committee meeting June 12th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Coco’s on Rosedale Highway.

First Aid Kit missing several items.   Mike will look into updating the kit and reviewing the inventory.

Possibly moving the meeting area.  Some ideas brought up were a pizza place.  It was mentioned it may have a negative impact moving the meeting.   At this time we will remain on the patio.

Upcoming Runs:

Annual Swamp Lake Run August 5, 6 and 7th.   Camping at Dinky Creek to stare and then trail camp.

Labor Day at Calico

Pismo Run the second week of June, Friday morning through Sunday evening.

Discussed the possibility of organizing some group runs, Sherman is still under snow.  Possibly Johnson Valley and Cougar Butte a mild to wild run.

Adopt a Trail No news on the trail.  Point Mugu does have two new signs and ours is very charcoal.  Looking for ideas of new signs.

Motion to Adjourn - Ken motioned Gene seconded, meeting adjourned 8:50 p.m.

Mike Kunz took his quads to Black Gulch out of Keysville along Freeway Ridge.  Mike got knocked off the quad AGAIN.  The trail is all washed out and water is running along the culvert.  Jeeps can’t go on it.  He mentioned that the “Adopt a Trail” sign is up so the club should get together and go fix the hole and work on the trail.

Cliff, Joey, Bob, Jim & Jack did a separate trip to the Hammers  - left paint on a lot of rocks and did some vehicle damage but had a great time.

Andy and Tony (from the Hammers) took Andy on a 90 mile an hour trip on some of the course.

February 2, 2011 – Crest Bar and Grill

www.bakersfieldtrailblazers.org

Call to Order:  7:30 p.m. by President Jess Deegan.

Introduction of Guests:   James & Barbara Johnston, 1992 Jeep YJ

Cathy Colbert, 1999 Jeep Wrangler,  Joe & Lori Abrao, 2009 Ford F150.

Approval of Minutes:  The January 5, 2011 Meeting Minutes were approved with one change.  The Blue Buggy was changed to The Blue Bunny and the dates were wrong for the Convention.  They should be February 25 – 27th, 2011.

Treasurer’s Report:  Was given by Sandy Worley.  We began with $4,252.14.  Deposits of $2,687.00, ending with $6,939.14.

Trip Reports:

Snow Run:  Richard Gauthier gave the report.  There were about 13 rigs that went.  The road was closed but they went anyway.  The snow was up to the top of the markers, 4 or 5 feet.  A couple of rigs turned around and out early.  Had to cut away 3 trees across of the trail.  The sun was shining and it was a really nice run.  Got home before dark.

Superstition Mountain:  Mike Kunz went on this run.  There were about 243 rigs and a very high number of breakages.  After running back and forth and towing several people all day Mike started back to camp.  On his way back he noticed that his rear tire had sheared off and was passing him as he was going downhill.

Barstow Races:  Joe Stocker went to Barstow for the 1st off road race of the year after the accident last year.  It was put on by the Mojave Off Road Club.  The race entry fee went up to $355 to $400 because they had to have seven BLM men to keep the spectators back.

Hungry Valley:  Frances Branch gave an update.  The Infectious Club was there and they had about 32 rigs that went on a run.  Then they had a play day where the women drove the Jeeps around through the training courses.  Had a lot of fun.

Nightmare:  Jess Deegan led the run.  There were 14 Jeeps from the Gear Grinders ahead of them and then 7 from another club behind them.  They had a great day, lots of nice sunshine.

Old Business:

1.    Convention – Sandy Worley:  She asked the Club if they want to donate towards the Convention and the Voyagers and we found out that the Voyagers have been disbanded.

Mike Kunz suggested making a donation towards the Friends for Johnson Valley.  It was discussed and there may not be a problem with them closing them down now that the military is having money problems.

Joe Stocker made a motion to give $500 to the General Legal Fund.  Jim seconded the motion and it passed the membership.  Jack Branch suggested that the $250 the Trailblazers usually give to the Voyagers during Convention be donated towards the CA 4x4 Scholarships.  This was discussed and a motion was made by Jack and was seconded by Mike Kunz.

2.    Convention Car Show (February 25 – 27, 2011; Gene Curtis:  There will be 4 categories at the Car Show.

a.    Best 4x4    b.    Best non 4x4   c.    People’s Choice          d.    Best Vendor/Commercial

They will open on Saturday at 7:00 a.m.  The show begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m.

New Business:

1.  Last month in January, an Event Committee was formed.  The initial members are Eileen Sanders, Jerri Curtis, Gigi Deegan and by phone was Sandy Worley.  Anyone that would like to be on this committee is invited to attend.  We will be meeting on the first Sunday of the month after the week of the Trailblazers meeting at 3:30 p.m.  (This Sunday is excluded due to the Super Bowl.) We will post the next meeting on the Website or by Yahoo.

2.  The Committee was formed to look into dates and times for the annual fundraiser and to look and find ways to market the Bakersfield Trailblazer’s Club to get more members.

 3.  The Committee came up with several suggestions which were discussed and a motion was made by Richard Gauthier that we try the weekend of March 31st to April 1, 2012 (as long as it is not on Easter weekend) to have our fundraiser and to keep the fundraiser at Calico Ghost Town.  This was seconded by Mike Kunz.

 4.  Jerri Curtis gave the report regarding the Veteran’s Day Parade.  No one knows who has the banner, but a few people will be looking.  Jim offered to look into having one made for the club.  Jerri gave the deco ideas for the parade and wanted to know if we could have Trailblazer flags made the same size as the US Flags.  It was decided that the committee would investigate and bring back the costs and ideas of what would be on the flag, i.e., the Trailblazer’s guy in his Jeep with Bakersfield Trailblazers surrounding it.

 5.  Street Faire:  Mike Kunz said that the City is moving the Street Fair to the Mill Creek Park (formerly, Central Park) because it costs $5,000 to close down Chester Avenue for the evening.  There was a concern about the Jeeps being on the grass at the Park, but Cathy told Mike that she might possibly put the Jeeps on the pavement so there would not be a problem.  We will be finding out more as time goes on.

 6.  Show & Shine at Hooters was mentioned again.

7.  Frances Branch suggested a new place to meet.  R & J’s at the corner of Hageman and Calloway.  It seats 40 and would be on the Patio but they have heaters to go out there in the winter time.  Jess made a note of it.

A Wake Up Call:

Joe Abrao told the Club that he thought the club was very unfriendly and that even though this was his first meeting, there were only three people who welcomed him to the meeting.  Also, he felt that there was a lot of people that would come to our meetings and join if they were not so intimidated by the big buggies and hard runs that were shown on the website and also all of the roll over’s and things that were talked about during the meeting.  A lot of people are just starting out and do not have the experience or the money to go on runs where they completely destroy their vehicles.  Most have to drive it to work the next day.

Frances Branch stood up and she also said the Club was unfriendly and even though she is a member and has been to meetings, she still feels she is an outsider and not a part of the club.

These things were discussed.  Richard Gauthier said that we need a “Meet & Greeter”  Maybe we need to think about how and in what way we do our meetings and change some things.  Start having raffles at every meeting, etc.  He said that the meetings are really business meetings and most of the times are boring.

Mike Kunz said that we have to have a broad base by trying to increase the size of the club.

Central District:  Randy tabled the Central District report until next time.

Adopt A Trail:  No Adopt a Trail this month.
